- This policy should be read in conjunction with the Charity Commission’s advice on safeguarding.
- Any abuse of children and young women (i.e. adult at risk), including those with vulnerabilities, under the supervision or care of Black Eve Foundation will not be tolerated. Such behaviour is contrary to our mission to care for young girls and women and to create for them an environment conducive to their healthy personal growth and success in life.
- It is the policy of Black Eve Foundation to report all allegations of abuse to statutory authorities, regardless of where the abuse took place.
- Black Eve Foundation:
– Starts from the principle that each person has a right to expect the highest level of care and protection, love, encouragement and respect we can give.– Acknowledges and will comply with all its responsibilities to safeguard children and young women at risk.
– Reports all allegations of abuse to the police within one working day.
– Recognises that everyone has the right to live free from violence, fear and abuse.
– Is fully committed to supporting children and young women at risk to achieve their full potential in an environment where they are protected from exploitation (whether mental or physical), abuse (whether psychological, spiritual or emotional) and maltreatment.
– Publishes details of who to contact if there are concerns about the welfare or safety of a child or young woman in settings where Black Eve activities take place. - This policy must be applied in all situations where it is alleged that a trustee, a member or a volunteer:
– Has behaved in a way that has harmed or may have harmed a child or a young woman at risk.
– Has possibly committed a criminal offence against or related to a child or a young woman at risk.
– Has behaved towards a child or children or a young woman or young women at risk in a way that indicates they may pose a risk of harm to children or young women at risk. – Has behaved or may have behaved in a way that indicates they may not be suitable to work with children or young women at risk. – Has behaved in such a way that, by actions or omissions, their conduct has been intended to interfere with or avoid civil investigations against a trustee, member or volunteer. - Trustees, staff and volunteers will be informed of this policy at induction and will receive safeguarding training appropriate to their role to learn to recognise possible signs of abuse or neglect, how to report any concern they may have, and how to protect children and young women at risk from harm, danger and potential threats. Anyone working directly with children and young women at risk will undergo safer recruitment checks and must hold a valid DBS clearance certificate or its equivalent in the country where they operate before starting their role.
- Trustees will ensure that safeguarding concerns are addressed promptly, and where appropriate, will take steps to review Black Eve Foundation’s own practices following a safeguarding incident to learn lessons to ensure that and prevent recurrence.
- If an allegation is made indicating that a child and or young woman with vulnerabilities (including woman at risk) is in immediate danger the allegation must be reported to the police and the local authority children’s department immediately, and it is to be recorded in Black Eve Foundation’s risk register which is reviewed annually and updated as needed to ensure that appropriate measures remain in place.
- All allegations of abuse of children and/or of young women must be reported to the designated safeguarding lead immediately. However, if a child or young woman at risk is in immediate danger, the volunteer must contact the police and/or the Local Authority Designated Officer) without delay and inform the safe-guarding lead as soon as possible afterwards.
- All allegations of abuse of children and/or young women at risk reported to any-one volunteering for Black Eve Foundation must be reported to the police and, in respect of those with children, the Local Authority Designated Officer (the LADO) within one day.
- Anyone who reports allegations, provides information or articulates concerns about abuse will be listened to seriously, with respect, courtesy, and sensitivity.
- Any allegation of abuse or information or concern about possible abuse will be processed in accordance with the Charity Commission’s safeguarding guidance, the statutory obligations under UK Law (including the Children Act 1989 and 2004, the Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023, and any applicable local safeguarding partnership procedures) and Black Eve Foundation’s own safe-guarding policy and procedures.
- Any person against whom an allegation is made (a respondent), or about whom information is received or a concern is raised, will be treated with respect, courtesy, and sensitivity.
- Black Eve Foundation will act in an open, transparent and accountable way in working in partnership with the police, the LADO, health agencies and other relevant agencies and external partners to safeguard and support children and young women at risk and to assist in bringing to justice anyone who has commit-ted an offence.
- Anyone acting in the name of Black Eve Foundation has a responsibility to act in accordance with the Charity Commission safeguarding guidance, and this Policy when it appears that any child or young woman has suffered or is at risk of abuse.
- Black Eve Foundation will make all partner schools and organisations aware of our safeguarding policy, and, in instances where they do not have adequate safe-guarding measures in place, we will offer them free safeguarding training and guidance to help them develop and implement safeguarding procedures whilst taking into account local laws.
- All those who have a role within Black Eve Foundation, whether in voluntary work or in paid employment, must understand that safeguarding oversight is a collective responsibility of all trustees, staff and volunteers, not of one individual, and must therefore comply with the requirements of this Policy.
- All beneficiaries will be provided with Black Eve Foundation’s safeguarding information for beneficiaries. This will let them know about their right to feel safe, how to protect themselves and others from harm, danger and potential threats, how to recognise possible signs of abuse or neglect in themselves or others, who they can talk to at Black Eve Foundation if they have a concern, how to report a concern and what will happen next, and the contact details of the designated safe-guarding lead as well as local helplines.
